Passive RFID Asset Tracking

Passive RFID hardware configuration includes a RFID reader that monitors the designed area for the presence of an RFID tag(s). Passive RFID systems use a transponder to send a signal to the RFID tag which absorbs energy from the received signal and then sends a signal back to the transponder. With this configuration the reader range of most Passive RFID system is one to 12 inches (based on the hardware and antenna selected).

Common uses for Passive RFID include Electronic Access Control Systems, Supply Chain or Manufacturing Process locating. These systems allow for RFID readers and antennas to be located within a close proximity of the RFID tags. Passive RFID is designed for use in situations where tags can pass within a couple of inches from the reader.

Passive RFID is used for the last known location of assets. The readers are placed in confined areas, such as a doorway or a specific location on a manufactures' assembly line. As the tag passes the reader, the tag is activated and the location is determined. Until the tag passes and is activated by another reader, the location of the asset will be the last recorded location.
